Immigration Medical Exam in Fairfax, VA: What Tests, Vaccinations and Health Screening Should You Expect?

Your attorney wants the medical exam done before Thanksgiving, so the I-693 can go in with the rest of your green card application. The only vaccine records you have are a card from your childhood clinic and a 2019 flu shot printout. So, before you book an immigration medical exam in Fairfax, VA, you’d like to know what the civil surgeon will check, so a missing record doesn’t hold anything up. Here’s how our I-693 exam works at Annandale Primary Care.

Will I Need Blood Tests at My Immigration Medical Exam in Fairfax, VA?

Yes. According to the CDC’s instructions for civil surgeons, everyone 2 and older has an IGRA blood test for tuberculosis. In addition, applicants from 18 to 44 are tested for syphilis, and those from 18 to 24 for gonorrhea.

Will Dr. Le Accept an Immigration Vaccine Card From Another Country?

Yes, as long as it’s written down. The CDC asks civil surgeons for a vaccination card or a copy of a medical chart showing the full date of each dose, and you’ll provide any English translation. Keep in mind that a dose you remember but can’t show on paper won’t count.

At the exam, Dr. Connie Le, our civil surgeon, will go through your dates with you. In the event a series is incomplete, the CDC instructs her to give you the next dose at the exam.

What Happens if My Immigration TB Test Comes Back Positive?

Per the CDC, a positive TB blood test leads to a chest X-ray. Rest assured, if the X-ray is normal and you have no symptoms, the CDC notes Dr. Le can still complete your form. In the event the X-ray shows something else, she’ll send you to the health department before she signs, and the CDC notes TB cultures need eight weeks before a negative result is final. Either way, our team will keep you posted on any extra tests or vaccinations.

Dr. Le, an internal medicine specialist with over 25 years of experience, sees patients at our Fairfax office on Old Lee Highway and our Annandale office on Evergreen Lane.
